Una chiacchierata con Paola Giorgi, autrice di Hair e Scarlatto. Atmosfere intense e scatti suggestivi che trasformano la fotografia in esperienza sensoriale oltre che narrativa, anche attraverso l'applicazione di materiali diversi.
P.G. : Il mio lavoro inizia con un click! Sono una fotografa e come tale ho cercato attraverso l’immagine un nuovo modo di esprimermi. Per me tutto comincia con il primo scatto, dopo il quale avviene l’elaborazione della fotografia stessa utilizzando materiali ed elementi che la rendono un’opera totalmente nuova e diversa.
Quando e come è iniziato il suo percorso artistico?
La scelta di frequentare una scuola d’arte ha in qualche modo dato inizio a quella che potrei definire una prematura ed entusiasta passione per le arti. Ho frequentato l’Istituto d’Arte, prediligendo da allora la fotografia, scegliendola come percorso proprio perché fin da bambina sono stata sempre affascinata dal mondo delle immagini, identificandolo con il linguaggio delle emozioni. Per me l’immagine è comunicazione, espressione. Nel mio caso si trasforma in forma d’arte, con elementi che aggiungono valore e diversità cromatiche.
Come è possibile descrivere il panorama artistico attuale? La pluralità di forme e la commistione di linguaggi rappresentano un aspetto da valorizzare o un elemento disturbante nella definizione della propria identità artistica?
Penso che l’avvento del linguaggio digitale abbia favorito una moltitudine di espressioni artistiche che forse troppo spesso vengono definite tali seppur prive di una vera impronta emozionale e di un autentico, reale talento dell’autore.
Il progetto, l’idea, vengono prima dell’opera o si sviluppano intorno ad essa?
In realtà le mie opere nascono nel momento stesso in cui eseguo lo scatto fotografico. Successivamente comincio a sperimentare intorno all'immagine, applicando idee che già in precedenza avevano stimolato la mia fantasia…posso dire con un pizzico d’ironia che la mia testa è sempre in movimento!
Qual è la sua visione del mercato dell’arte? Considera importante conoscerne le dinamiche?
Ad essere sincera è un mondo che non conosco a fondo, nonostante abbia avuto modo di vendere qualche mio lavoro. Forse dovrei conoscere le dinamiche per capire meglio e poter esprimere in maniera esaustiva la mia opinione sull’argomento.
Qual è il suo rapporto con il pubblico?
Il pubblico è importante per me, senza di esso non si avrebbero determinate conferme che sia dalle persone comuni che dagli addetti ai lavori possono provenire e migliorare il nostro lavoro. Credo molto anche nel consenso delle persone che non hanno niente a che fare con l’arte, perché ritengo che il loro sia un parere del tutto emozionale, unicamente scandito dai sentimenti e dalle sensazioni suscitate dall’opera che osservano in quel momento.
Fra le opere selezionate quale considera più riuscita?
Sicuramente “HAIR”! E’ il primo scatto sul quale ho sperimentato la tecnica di attaccare alla superficie materiale differente misto a colla a caldo, riproducendo infine l'immagine così trasformata, appprofondita.
Quali tecniche ritiene di maggior interesse?
In verità non credo che ci siano tecniche di maggiore o minore interesse, credo invece che sia il linguaggio o ciò che si vuole esprimere attraverso la propria opera a renderla interessante, a prescindere dalla tecnica usata.
Quali artisti contemporanei apprezza e/o considera vicini alla propria ispirazione?
Onestamente e senza peccare di presunzione non ho un modello d’ispirazione, ossia ho ideato autonomamente la mia tecnica per esprimermi, cercando di sfruttare spesso e volentieri anche materiali riciclati.
My work starts with a click! I am a photographer and this makes me search for a new way of expressing myself through the camera. Everything begins with the first shot, after that I edit the image, processing it, using different materials, adding elements, and a brand new artwork emerges.
When and how did your artistic path begin?
The decision to join an Art school in the past has started somehow what I can define as an early and enthusiastic passion for the arts. I attended to the Art Institute, preferring photography ever since, choosing it as the path to follow, and that was because I has always been captured by the world of the images, identifying it with the language of emotions. For me each picture is a synonym of communicating, expressing something. In my case it shifts into Art, with elements that add value and different shades of colors.
How it is possible to describe contemporary art’s horizon nowadays? Multiplicity of forms and a melting of languages can be seen as a valuable aspect or a confusing element throughout the definition process of the author’s artistic identity?
I think that the age of the digital language and new media has facilitated the making of a multitude of creations maybe too easily called artistic expressions, even when there are no evident emotional mark and a real, true talent in the author.
The project, the idea, come before the artwork or within it, as it is taking shape?
Actually my works born the very moment I take the photo, and then around it, when I begin to experiment applying the ideas that had previously moved my imagination... I can say with a little bit of irony that my head never stops!
What is your perspective on the art market? Do you think it is important to know precisely how it works?
Honestly it is something I don’t know inside out, although I already sold some of my artworks. Maybe I should learn more about its ways to understand better how it works and be able to express my opinion on this subject exhaustively.
What is your relation with the potential public? How do you feel about the eye of the observer?
People is important to me, without an audience there would not be that kind of certainties about our work, the opinions that come from observers and critics improving what we are doing. I really trust the appreciation of people who are not connected to the making of the art itself, because I feel their thoughts completely emotional, originated only by the feelings and the sensations risen from the picture they are looking at.
What is your favourite artwork among the selected ones?
Surely "HAIR"! It was the first shot I processed experiencing mixed media technique,adding different materials and finally reshooting the picture.
What kind of techniques are you most interested in?
Well, actually I don’t think that there are different degrees of interest for the various techniques. I think it is the language that makes the artworks interesting instead.
Who are the contemporary artists you consider the closest to your inspiration? Who are the ones you appreciate most?
Honestly I don’t think I have an icon or a model for my inspiration. I devised my own technique to express myself, trying to use also recycled materials as often as it is possible.
