Guardando le sue opere sembra che l’impressione del momento si combini con una poesia delle forme, una sorta di riflessione raggiunta attraverso l’attenzione alla scala cromatica, alle sfumature. Come ottiene questa fusione tra l’aspetto descrittivo, letterario, e quello pittorico, formale?
È piuttosto semplice per me. Scrivo da quando sono molto giovane. Appassionata di poesia, ho sviluppato un particolare interesse per i componimenti brevi. Da anni scrivo “i miei piccoli Haiku”. Quando ho iniziato a fotografare ho cominciato ad accompagnare i miei componimenti con le immagini che scattavo. Finalmente ho ottenuto quello che desideravo: creare immagini che possano parlare, immagini in prosa.
Looking at your images it seems that the taste of the moment is always combined with a graceful, rich interest in chromatic scale and a sort of poetry of shapes. How can you reach this fusion between a literary impression and a shaped, almost painting’s care for the subject?
Well, it is very simple to me. I have been dedicating myself to writing since I was very young. I have a passion for poetry, short prose above any other form. For many years I have been writing what I call "my little haikus". When I started to take photos, I began to accompany my prose with my own images. In the end I accomplished something I think I wished for a long time: enjoy creating images that speak, pictures in prose.
Le opere d’arte, le fotografie in particolare, esprimono il momento, trattenuto direttamente dal fluire della realtà e offerto nuovamente, come qualcosa in più, un’aggiunta che immediatamente si fonde nella corrente. Cosa implica per lei l’uso dell’espressione creativa? Aggiungere all’immaginario qualcosa che prima non esisteva?
Oh, mi fa sentire un pesce nell’acqua! Penso non ci fosse rimedio fin dall’inizio per me, sono sempre stata coinvolta nell’immaginario. La mia mente domina ogni aspetto della mia vita. Qualsiasi cosa io faccia, attraggo i soggetti che uso per costruire il mio immaginario.
Artworks, photographs, in particular, are expressions of moments taken directly from the flowing of reality and given again, as an addition which immediately appears to be molten in the current. How does it feel for you using creative visual expressions? Making additions to the imaginary?
Oh! I'm like a fish in water! I think I had no remedy from the start, I have always been addicted to the imaginary. My mind dominates almost every aspect of my life. Everything I do is attracting things where I have to use my imaginary world.
Può descriverci la sua tecnica?
Di solito immagino il risultato finale per ogni fotografia dal momento dello scatto. Dopo applico principalmente la stratificazione, a partire dall’immagine originale. Uso il tablet e il disegno a mano libera. Faccio ricerche e aggiungo sempre nuove tecniche, usando diversi textures a strati.
Can you describe us your technique?
Well, I usually imagine what could be the final result of each photo since I do the shot. Then I mainly use the layering technique applying it to the initial photo. I also use a tablet and apply freehand drawing. I researched a lot and am always adding new techniques, always using layered textures.
E il processo artistico? Come viene sviluppato?
Questo è più complicato da descrivere. Il processo artistico è altamente soggettivo. Per me funziona come un dialogo con l’immagine: prima ci presentiamo, ci guardiamo…poi inizio a parlarle…applico gli strati, correggo i colori, le luci, le ombre…guardo ancora, vado avanti…e poi si mette fine alla conversazione. Questo quando realizzo che il processo è completo.
What about the artistic process?
That is more complicated. The artistic process is highly subjective, even to be explained. To me it works like a dialogue with the image: at first we introduce to each other, we look ... Then I start to talk to it ... I apply textures, I correct the color, the light, the shades ... I look again, I go on ... And finally it puts an end to the conversation. That's when I realize that the process is complete.
Essere un artista significa fare delle scelte. Possono essere semplicemente a livello tecnico, di composizione, o implicare l’ispirazione. Come guarda il soggetto? Come sceglie il modo di rappresentarlo o, in generale, cosa rappresentare nei suoi lavori?
Quando ho iniziato con la fotografia avevo già avuto l’opportunità di vedere molte opere d’arte. Mio padre era un gran consumatore di ogni forma d’arte, così fin da piccola questo settore mi è sempre stato familiare. Mio padre era anche un fotografo dilettante, e io sono cresciuta osservando il processo creativo. Cominciando a scattare le mie fotografie mi sono preoccupata di non avere uno stile che somigliasse a quello che ammiravo nel lavoro dei miei fotografi preferiti. Mi rendevo conto di fotografare senza un criterio preciso, e poi di modificare le immagini senza usare schemi precisi. Alla fine è come capire che la strada la scegli da solo, a livello personale, senza accorgertene. È come fare una passeggiata scegliendo il proprio modo di guardare l’uno o l’altro paesaggio: il mare, le montagne, la strada…
Being an artist means often making choices. They could be barely compositional or come out through inspirations. How do you look at the subject? How do you choose the way to represent it or what has to be represented, in general, in your works?
When I started with photography, I had already the chance to see many artworks. My father was a great consumer of any kind of artistic expressions, so I started to be comfortable in that world since I was very young. My father was a great amateur photographer too, so I grew up watching creation processes. When I started to take photos, I was worried about not having a style like the ones I admire looking at the work of my favorite photographers. I saw that I was taking photos with no criteria, and then edited them without established patterns. At the end it is like realizing that you are choosing your path on your own, without noticing it. It's like taking a walk, choosing the personal way to see one landscape or another: sea, mountains, roads ...
Qual è la situazione del mercato dell’arte dal suo punto di vista?
Oh, molto brutta! Ho cominciato a esporre quando la crisi si faceva già sentire in molti paesi. La gente deve consumare meno, e l’arte è un prodotto di lusso. È molto difficile accedere alle gallerie specializzate. La crisi riguarda sia gli artisti che le gallerie, e loro risolvono il problema nel modo più facile, chiedendo spese maggiori per far esporre. Tutti i costi sono aumentati e il risultato finale è che gli artisti devono sostenere più spese di quelle che dovrebbero affrontare per andare “su strada”.
Which is the market situation by your point of view?
Oh, very bad! I just started to go into the world of exposure when crisis was sweeping over many countries. People ought to consume less, and art is a luxury product. It is very difficult to access the art galleries. The crisis affecting both artists and galleries, so they want to make it the easiest way, asking too much money to artists for exhibitions. Everything has gone up, so the final result is that the artists have much more expenses than what they had to pay to get to "the street".
Pensa che gli artisti, i fotografi in particolare, possano usare con successo il web?
Certo! Infatti è quello che sto facendo. Le mie opera sono state accettate a livello internazionale grazie al fatto che sono pubblicate sul web su diversi siti. Ed è certamente molto importante avere un proprio posto dove esporre il proprio lavoro. Credo che le risorse web siano uno strumento essenziale per le arti in generale e la fotografia in particolare, per la sua condizione visuale.
Do you think artists, photographers in particular, could use web resources successfully?
Of course! In fact we’re already doing. My work has been widely accepted in many parts of the world thanks to the fact I could show it on various internet sources. And of course, it is very important to have a place on your own to show your work. I believe that web resources are an essential medium for the arts in general and photography in particular, for their visual condition.
Cosa può dirci delle sue aspettative riguardo alla carriera? E le aspettative artistiche, in particolare?
Beh, non considero la carriera artistica qualcosa a cui aspirare in questo momento. E non perché non creda in quello che faccio. Al contrario, penso che il mio lavoro sia utile al pubblico, anche solo per sognare attraverso o a causa di esso, e vuol dire moltissimo per me. Così ritengo di dover aspettare finché le condizioni economiche globali non cambieranno. Comunque l’arte stessa aspira ad andare lontano. Mi interessa molto il progresso tecnologico per poter approfondire il mio mondo immaginario, esprimendo quanto sembra sia nascosto…e quello che invece non lo è.
What about are your career expectations ? And the artistic?
Well, considering the artistic one as a career it is something I don’t aspire that much for now. It is not because I don’t believe in what I do. On the contrary, I think it might be useful to the public, even only to dream about, or because of, and it would mean a lot for me. So I think I have to wait until global economic conditions change. Besides, art aspires to go far. I am very interested in the technical progress to get deeper into my imaginary world, expressing what appears to be hidden ... and what is not.
Può descriverci come affronta una commissione per un lavoro nuovo?
Se ho una nuova commissione, la persona che mi ha chiesto l’opera ha già familiarità con il mio lavoro. Non lavorando in termini di fotografia pura, il mio modo di esprimermi va accettato a priori. A partire da questa condizione posso aver a che fare con qualsiasi tipo di richiesta: la mia immaginazione non ha confini.
Could you describe us your way of approaching a new commissioned work?
Since I got a commissioned work, the person who asked for it has to be familiar with my work. As I am not working on pure photography, my way of expressing myself has to be accepted. Starting from this point I can deal with every type of request: my imaginary world has no boundaries.
Essere un’artista professionista è stata una sua scelta? O ritiene che alcuni eventi in particolare portino gli artisti a scegliere l’una o l’altra strada?
Oh no! Penso che nella maggior parte dei casi diventare una fotografa di professione, o anche solo scegliere la fotografia come hobby, non è qualcosa che si decide. Penso che il più delle volte dipenda dalle circostanze che ci portano a prendere in mano una macchina fotografico con un intento creativo. Nel mio caso stavo cercando di creare delle immagini che fossero mie per rappresentare le mie poesie. E credo sia meraviglioso come ogni processo creativo faccia del bene al mondo della fotografia.
Being a professional artist and photographer was completely a personal choice? Or do you think mainly events take artists to choose a path or another?
Oh no! I think that, in most cases, the profession of photographer, or even just the choice of taking photos as a hobby, it’s not something you decide. I think that most of the times it depends on the circumstances that lead us to grab a camera on hands for creative purposes. In my case I was looking for creating my own images and use them to represent my poems. In fact, I think it's wonderful to do some good to the world of photography via every creative process.
